Houthi Attacks Leave Saudi Arabia Facing Air Defense and Security Challenges

Riyadh (Qudrat Daily) — The American newspaper The Wall Street Journal has reported that Saudi Arabia is facing severe security and air defense challenges in the wake of continuous drone and missile attacks by Houthi rebels. The limited stockpile of interceptor missiles used for its defense systems has further complicated the Kingdom’s defense strategy. In the current situation, the Saudi government must maintain a difficult balance between protecting its leadership and installations and advancing its economic objectives.

In a report published by The Wall Street Journal, it has been revealed that in view of the escalating attacks by the Houthis, the movement of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is being conducted under extremely strict and extraordinary security arrangements. Saudi authorities have deployed special security guards for the Crown Prince’s protection, and his movements are being confined to specific palaces equipped with bunker facilities and secured accordingly.

Citing Saudi administrative and security officials, the report stated that the stockpile of interceptor missiles used to neutralize Houthi attacks mid-air is rapidly depleting. Due to this situation, providing effective simultaneous air defense for Saudi Arabia’s vast territory, critical energy installations, and royal palaces has become a major challenge. Saudi defense officials are being forced to relocate their missile defense batteries from one location to another so that priority protection can be provided to the most dangerous and sensitive installations.

The report pointed out that the ongoing security tension with the Houthis has not remained limited to a defensive nature alone but has also increased pressure on Saudi Arabia’s major economic projects. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s economic plan, launched to reduce dependence on oil and diversify the economy, may now face slowdown or difficulties due to these security threats and heavy defense expenditures.
