PTI Alliance Rejects Governor’s Rule, Emergency in KP, Calls Move an Attack on Public Mandate

QUETTA / ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) has strongly rejected the proposed imposition of Governor’s Rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), terming the move unconstitutional and undemocratic and an outright assault on the public mandate.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, the alliance said the move would constitute a serious violation of the Constitution of Pakistan and a blatant disregard for the people’s will and right to vote.

The spokesperson claimed that Pakistan’s political history showed that undemocratic measures and the imposition of Governor’s Rule had repeatedly been associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The spokesperson alleged that the latest move continued this pattern of what the alliance described as undemocratic practices.

The alliance maintained that the proposed action had no moral, legal, constitutional or democratic justification, describing it as an attempt to undermine the genuine mandate given to the people’s elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Drawing a comparison with Balochistan, the spokesperson said no similar action had been taken despite what the alliance described as a severe deterioration in the province’s law and order and administrative situation. The spokesperson alleged that KP was being targeted for political reasons despite its government and provincial assembly having been formed on the basis of the people’s mandate.

The statement further alleged that an unelected and unrepresentative group had resorted to authoritarian measures out of fear of a peaceful long march and a public movement. Such actions, the spokesperson warned, could seriously undermine the country’s federal structure, unity and stability.

The alliance said that instead of listening to public demands and addressing political grievances through democratic means, those in power had once again chosen what it described as an authoritarian path.

It warned that the imposition of Governor’s Rule and an emergency through unconstitutional means would pose a serious threat to Pakistan’s security, federal cohesion and long-term stability.

The TTAP spokesperson announced that the alliance would soon convene an emergency meeting of its allied political parties to discuss the situation. Following consultations, the alliance would present a joint and agreed course of action before the nation, aimed at protecting Pakistan’s Constitution, democracy and federal system.
