PPP Governor Staged a Drama; Issuing Such Orders Is an Attack on the Constitution and Democracy: Sohail Afridi

Peshawar (Qudrat Daily): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has strongly criticised the federal government and the Pakistan Peoples Party, terming the governor’s chairing of a security meeting an attack on the Constitution and democracy.

Addressing a meeting of the provincial cabinet, he said that the federal government’s current policy is neither effective in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa nor in Balochistan. Convening a security meeting by the governor in the presence of an elected government and cabinet with a two-thirds majority is an extremely regrettable and unconstitutional act. He directed that the IG and Chief Secretary should not act on any unconstitutional or illegal order, adding that “we will remain peaceful in all circumstances and will speak only of the Constitution and the law.”

He alleged that the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been deliberately worsened. He claimed that Bilawal’s grandfather and General Yahya Khan broke Pakistan, and now Bilawal’s father is conspiring to create another East Pakistan. He said that prioritising personal interests over national interests has been an old habit of the PPP, and that an opinion would be sought from the Advocate General to determine the constitutional status of the governor chairing a security meeting in this manner.

Sohail Afridi further said that the federal government’s attitude has always been like that of a stepmother. Despite the merger of the tribal districts, their financial rights have not been paid, and billions of rupees owed to the affected people have been withheld to date. He said that the handbags of the wives of those in power are worth crores of rupees, while only Rs400,000 was allocated for an entire household of tribal people, which has not yet been fully received.

He clarified that the provincial government has provided Rs21 billion from its own resources for the displaced persons. With the most modern weapons available to the KP Police, the government always stands with its institutions and the people. The provincial government also has to bear the responsibility for damages caused by military operations and drone strikes. Those making decisions in the federation do not realise the difficulties the people face as a result of those decisions. If the federation is sincere with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it should upgrade the province’s NFC share and pay the approximately Rs1.25 billion in dues owed to a province that has sacrificed 80,000 precious lives.
