Two Pakistani Youths Arrested After Seeking AI Assistance for Alleged Murder Plans

Islamabad:Two young men in Pakistan have reportedly been arrested after seeking assistance from an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot while discussing plans to kill other people, with information from the chatbot eventually reaching the FBI and Pakistani authorities.

According to a report by journalist Umar Cheema published in *The News*, the two suspects were from Bahawalpur and Karachi and had no connection with each other. Both were reportedly interested in American crime drama series and had developed separate plans.

In the Bahawalpur case, the young man allegedly planned to kill his father and was reportedly influenced by the television series *Breaking Bad*, whose storyline includes a character involved in producing poison at home.

The young man allegedly asked the AI chatbot Claude questions related to his plan, including questions about the quantities of chemicals. According to the report, the nature of his queries prompted Claude’s company to notify the FBI, which subsequently passed the information to Pakistani authorities.

During the investigation, the young man’s parents were reportedly questioned and later forgave their son.

In a separate case involving a young man from Karachi, the suspect allegedly told the chatbot that the son of a police officer had insulted his father and that he wanted to take revenge by killing him.

The report said the young man was influenced by the television series *Dexter* and allegedly discussed a plan to abduct the police officer’s son and throw him into a sewer. He was also reportedly using Claude to ask questions related to the plan, after which the information was reported to authorities.

During questioning, the Karachi suspect reportedly told police that he had only been imagining a story and had no actual intention of carrying out the plan.

The cases highlight how AI companies may identify and report potentially serious threats communicated through their platforms, while the allegations against the two individuals remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings.
