Maryam Nawaz Positioning Herself for Prime Minister, Alleges Hamid Mir

ISLAMABAD – September 7, 2026: In his latest column, renowned journalist and analyst Hamid Mir has leveled serious allegations against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, claiming that her recent statements indicate she is preparing for the Prime Minister’s office.

Mir wrote that Maryam Nawaz’s demeanor and recent public addresses suggest her ambitions extend beyond the Chief Ministership of a single province. He asserted that she is actively engaged in constitutional and political preparations to assume the country’s top political office in the near future.

The journalist particularly criticized Maryam Nawaz’s recent statement regarding terrorism, calling it highly damaging. Mir noted that by saying Punjab faces more of a threat from neighboring provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan than from India, she has inadvertently bolstered India’s stance on the issue and caused concern among the people of occupied Kashmir .

“Maryam Nawaz has clearly stated that she does not face a threat from a neighboring country but from the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan,” Mir wrote in his column for UrduPoint. “The Chief Minister of Pakistan’s largest province is directly contradicting the military and political leadership’s consistent claims that India is behind the terrorism and unrest in those provinces” .

Mir’s commentary comes amid widespread political backlash against the Punjab CM. Opposition parties, including the PTI, have condemned her remarks, accusing her of promoting provincial division and undermining national unity . PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has demanded that Maryam Nawaz apologize for the controversial statement .

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has sought to clarify the remarks. Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari defended Maryam Nawaz, stating that her comments were “misrepresented” and that she was merely referring to terrorist movements across provincial borders .

The controversy has intensified the ongoing debate over provincial harmony and national security in Pakistan.
