NEPRA Tightens Performance Standards for Power Distribution Companies

ISLAMABAD:The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has tightened the regulatory framework for electricity distribution companies, broadening the performance standards they will be required to meet under new regulations.

Significant regulatory changes are expected in Pakistan’s power distribution sector as NEPRA moves away from the performance framework that has been in place for nearly two decades and introduces a more comprehensive and measurable system.

Under the new framework, power distribution companies will be held accountable for the reliability of electricity supply, customer services, investments, safety and the adoption of modern technologies.

The newly issued **NEPRA Performance Standards (Distribution) Regulations, 2026** have replaced the basic framework established under the **Performance Standards (Distribution) Rules, 2005**.

The new regulations significantly expand the areas against which the performance of electricity distribution companies will be assessed.

The revised standards are intended to make distribution companies more accountable and improve the reliability, safety and quality of electricity services provided to consumers across the country.
