Faiz Hameed, Others to Be Charged Over May 9: Rana Sanaullah

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Senator Rana Sanaullah has said that former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed will be formally charged in connection with the May 9 incidents, along with several other individuals.

Speaking on Samaa TV, Rana Sanaullah described the May 9 violence as an attack on the state and military institutions, saying it would neither be forgiven nor forgotten.

He said the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) had previously stated that the May 9 incident constituted an attack on the institution and that no compromise could be made over the matter.

Rana Sanaullah said Faiz Hameed would also be formally charged over the May 9 events and that some other people would also fall within the scope of the proceedings.

He added that there could be a way forward if those involved offered a sincere and genuine apology. However, he said, instead of apologizing even verbally, they had claimed that the incident had been carried out by the institution itself.

Discussing the country’s political situation, the PML-N leader said that after 10 to 15 years of political confrontation, the PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had realized that this approach was not productive and decided to work together.

However, he said, Imran Khan subsequently emerged as a political challenge that, in his words, had remained difficult for everyone to handle.

Regarding Imran Khan’s possible transfer to a hospital, Rana Sanaullah said that initially he was being considered for treatment at Shifa International Hospital instead of PIMS. However, intelligence agencies reportedly warned that his transfer to Shifa could create a serious law-and-order situation.

He further said that under the law, prisoners could only receive treatment at government hospitals and could not be transferred to private hospitals.

Expressing deep sorrow over the deaths of newborn children in the fire incident at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad, Rana Sanaullah said incidents involving the theft of newborns from hospitals or such accidents were extremely serious issues.

He called for a complete and transparent inquiry into the PIMS tragedy and demanded that any officer or official found responsible for negligence should be given exemplary punishment.
