Quetta:In a concerning development, Sindh has reportedly reduced water supply to Balochistan through the Kirthar Canal by 60%, exacerbating water scarcity in the region. According to Abdul Hamid, a member from Balochistan, the province relies on water from both the Pat Feeder and Kirthar Canals, but has been receiving only a fraction of its required amount for the past month.
This drastic reduction has severely impacted agricultural areas like Nasirabad and Jaffarabad, where crops are drying up due to insufficient irrigation. Abdul Hamid further highlighted that Balochistan is also experiencing a 5-10% decrease in water supply from the Pat Feeder Canal, compounding the agricultural challenges faced by local farmers.
The situation worsened following disruptions at the Sukkur Barrage, which further diminished Balochistan’s water share from Sindh. Meanwhile, Sindh continues to allocate full water quotas to its own districts, leaving Balochistan grappling with mounting agricultural losses.
Efforts are underway as Balochistan’s irrigation department team visited Sukkur to negotiate with Sindh authorities for the rightful allocation of water according to the agreement. The province’s representatives are urgently seeking resolutions to mitigate the ongoing water crisis affecting farmers and communities reliant on agriculture for their livelihoods.
