Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Emphasizes Continued Collaboration with the UN on Climate Change and Development

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that Pakistan will continue to work with the United Nations on various projects, particularly in the field of climate change, and that developed nations will fulfill their climate financing commitments.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister shared these views during a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohammad Yahya, who visited the Prime Minister’s House on Friday. During the meeting, the Prime Minister commended the United Nations’ efforts in supporting ongoing important work in Pakistan and emphasized the need to further strengthen cooperation with the UN in areas of sustainable development and climate change.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the crucial role of UN Secretary-General António Guterres in mobilizing international support for Pakistan during the devastating floods of 2022. He reiterated Pakistan’s strong political commitment to addressing the impact of climate change, emphasizing the importance of climate financing in combating these effects. The Prime Minister expressed hope that developed countries would honor their climate financing pledges.
He also emphasized that Pakistan would continue its collaboration with the UN on various initiatives, including those focused on climate change. Furthermore, the Prime Minister stressed the need to bridge the financing gap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and called for reforms in the global financial architecture to ensure greater representation of developing countries in international financial institutions.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Syed Tariq Fatemi, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam, and senior government officials.
