Overseas Pakistanis Reject Appeal to Halt Remittances Amid Imran Khan’s Call for Civil Disobedience

Islamabad: Overseas Pakistanis have reportedly rejected the appeal made by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, urging them to stop sending remittances to Pakistan as part of his civil disobedience movement.

According to recent statistics from the State Bank of Pakistan, Pakistani expatriates sent a record $3.1 billion in remittances in December 2024. The figures indicate a significant growth in foreign remittances, with a year-on-year increase of 29.3% and a month-on-month rise of 5.6% in December.

The State Bank’s report further highlighted that in the first half of the fiscal year 2024, the total remittances stood at $17.8 billion, marking a 32.8% increase compared to $13.4 billion sent during the same period in the previous fiscal year 2023.

In terms of sources, the majority of remittances in December came from Saudi Arabia, with $770.6 million, followed by the United Arab Emirates with $631.5 million, the United Kingdom with $456.9 million, and the United States with $284.3 million.

The rejection of Imran Khan’s appeal indicates the continued financial support from overseas Pakistanis, despite the political unrest and calls for a halt in remittance flows.
