ICC Introduces Changes to World Test Championship Points System for 2025 Final

The International Cricket Council (ICC) continues to evolve the rules of modern cricket, and has decided to introduce additional points for the World Test Championship (WTC). The final of the World Test Championship will be held at Lord’s from June 11 to 15, 2025, with ticket sales already underway.
According to media reports, significant changes will be made to the points structure for the fourth edition of the World Test Championship. The ICC has faced criticism for the previous points system, which was seen as ambiguous and unfair, prompting this adjustment.
The new system will mirror the structure of several prestigious first-class domestic competitions, such as the Ranji Trophy and Sheffield Shield, by awarding extra points for big victories. This change aims to encourage teams to play more aggressive cricket.
Additionally, efforts will be made to improve the tournament as the current system does not allow all 10 teams to play against each other. The revised points system will be discussed during an ICC meeting in April.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been a vocal critic of the existing structure, having failed to reach the final in all three editions despite being hosts. According to ECB Chairman Richard Thompson, the World Test Championship should be more equitable and competitive.
