Pakistan Maintains Firm Stance on Hosting Champions Trophy, ICC Meeting Postponed Until Tomorrow
Islamabad: The International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting to decide on the hosting of the Champions Trophy has been postponed until tomorrow. The key meeting, which was scheduled to take place today, failed to reach a decision on whether Pakistan will host the prestigious event or not. According to sources, during the short meeting of ICC Board Directors, various proposals were discussed, and further deliberations will take place in tomorrow’s session.
The meeting in Dubai was attended by PCB Chairman Mohammad Nawaz and several board heads from other countries, while some joined the discussion via video call. Pakistan’s cricket board emphasized its stance of hosting the entire event within Pakistan and strongly opposed the Hybrid Model proposed by the ICC.
ICC officials presented some alternative proposals, but after initial discussions, the matter was deferred until Saturday. Sources indicated that both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will consult their respective governments to help facilitate a resolution.
The ICC is aiming to propose a solution that is acceptable to both parties. In the meeting, the PCB also outlined potential losses Pakistan could incur if the Indian team does not participate, which would be a significant blow to the event’s success.
Pakistan’s delegation remained steadfast in its position, rejecting any flexibility on the Hybrid Model and reaffirming its commitment to hosting the tournament in its entirety. The PCB reiterated that if India benefits in any way from the proposed changes, Pakistan’s team will not compete against its traditional rival in any future events.
The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has been exerting pressure on the ICC, leveraging its commercial power and sponsorships to push for the Hybrid Model, which divides the hosting responsibilities between countries. However, Pakistan has made it clear that it will not compromise on the issue of equal participation.
Prior to the meeting, PCB Chairman Mohammad Nawaz had communicated Pakistan’s firm stance to the ICC, stating, “We will endure the hardships, but we will not compromise on our dignity.” Pakistan has nearly completed all arrangements for hosting the Champions Trophy and is now waiting for a final decision.
Meanwhile, broadcasters’ deadlines for the tournament’s schedule have already passed. With both sides at an impasse, the issue may be resolved through a vote by the ICC Board Members.
