Chinese Company Alleges Sindh Government Official Demanded Luxury Apartment in Dubai for Tender

Islamabad:A Chinese company working in Pakistan has lodged a formal complaint with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), accusing an officer of the Sindh government of demanding a luxury apartment in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa in exchange for awarding a tender.

According to media reports, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Hubei ShuiZhong Water Resources and Hydropower Construction Company Limited (HBWSZ) filed the complaint with NAB, alleging that the Director of Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP), Ghulam Mohiuddin Mughal, demanded a 3,600 square foot apartment in Burj Khalifa in return for awarding the contract for the restoration and upgrade of Sukkur Barrage.

The Chinese company claimed that the officer included a picture of Burj Khalifa along with his demand. In the letter addressed to NAB Karachi, the company urged immediate investigation into the matter, warning that failure to take action against the official could force them to halt work on the project.

The Sukkur Barrage Restoration and Expansion Project, a $34 billion initiative funded by the World Bank, aims to extend the operational life of the 90-year-old Sukkur Barrage for another 30 years. The project includes structural upgrades, mechanical improvements, and the establishment of an enhanced monitoring system.

Sukkur Barrage is a vital part of the Indus Basin Irrigation System, supporting seven canals that irrigate 3.2 million hectares of farmland, generating an annual agricultural income of $2.29 billion.
