Provincial Media Fellowship Program Launched in Quetta to Promote Responsible Journalism and Women’s Rights
QUETTA: The inaugural ceremony of the Provincial Media Fellowship Program was held at the Pink Hall of the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS). The initiative is a joint collaboration of the Balochistan Government’s Women Development Department, BUITEMS, the Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Addressing the ceremony, Secretary Women Development Sahira Atta said that the media is a powerful force for bringing positive social change. She emphasized that responsible reporting on gender-based violence (GBV), child marriage, and issues concerning women and children is the need of the hour.
She said the Government of Balochistan is working closely with relevant institutions to protect women’s rights, promote their empowerment, and build a safer and more inclusive society.
Sahira Atta noted that the fellowship program would enhance the professional skills of journalists, enabling them to produce fact-based, balanced, and sensitive reporting while raising public awareness on critical social issues.
Speaking on the occasion, BUITEMS Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Hafeez said that universities are not only centers of education but also play a vital role in social development and national progress. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting young journalists and media professionals through modern research, training, and practical skill development.
He added that responsible journalism promotes positive thinking in society and contributes significantly to protecting the rights of women and children, advancing social justice, and achieving sustainable development goals. He described the joint initiative as an important milestone in improving the standard of journalism in Balochistan.
Dr. Hafeez also informed participants that BUITEMS has recently launched Bachelor of Science programs in Forensic Sciences and Public Health.
Director Public Relations Saeed Shahwani also addressed the gathering and highlighted the vital role of the media in shaping public opinion and promoting responsible communication.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, media representatives, faculty members, students, and participants from various sectors. At the conclusion of the event, commemorative shields were presented to participants, followed by a group photograph.
