Iran Says Message Exchange With US Continues Despite Distrust Over Past Negotiations
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has said that an active exchange of messages between Tehran and Washington is continuing through mediating countries, while accusing the United States of repeatedly undermining diplomatic efforts.
Speaking in an interview, Baghaei said that countries including Pakistan and Qatar are playing an active role in facilitating communication between Iran and the United States. However, he stressed that Iran’s priority remains defending its sovereignty in response to recent attacks.
According to Baghaei, Iran fulfilled its obligations under a memorandum of understanding to ensure the safe passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz within the agreed 30-day period. He alleged that before the deadline expired, the United States resumed military action, citing reported maritime incidents as justification.
Baghaei further claimed that this was the third time in the past year that Iran’s diplomatic efforts had been undermined by military attacks during ongoing negotiations.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also alleged that the United States had failed to release Iran’s frozen assets despite provisions in the memorandum of understanding calling for their release.
