Mobile Internet Suspension Likely Across Much of Balochistan During August Over Security Concerns
QUETTA: Mobile internet services may be temporarily suspended across Quetta and several other districts of Balochistan during August due to security concerns and precautionary measures ahead of Pakistan’s Independence Day, according to official sources.
Sources in the provincial Home Department said the proposal is under consideration following intelligence reports citing potential security threats to sensitive installations and public events during the month. Authorities have reportedly placed Quetta and several other districts on high alert amid concerns that militant groups could attempt to disrupt peace during Independence Day celebrations.
According to the sources, security agencies have recommended the temporary suspension of mobile data and internet services as a preventive measure. If approved, the restrictions could be imposed either in phases or across entire districts, with services in some sensitive areas potentially remaining suspended for several days.
Officials emphasized that no final decision has yet been made and that any action will be taken after consultations between the provincial government, the Home Department, and security agencies.
Security officials said the proposed suspension is intended to restrict communication among militant groups, prevent the possible use of remote-controlled explosive devices, and facilitate security operations. Additional deployments of police, Levies, Frontier Corps (FC), and other law enforcement personnel are also expected in sensitive areas.
Meanwhile, residents, traders, students, freelancers, and online business owners have expressed concern that a prolonged internet shutdown could disrupt businesses, banking services, online transactions, educational activities, and other daily operations. They urged the government to limit any restrictions to only the most sensitive areas and for the shortest possible duration to minimize inconvenience to the public.
