Muneeb Farooq Says Rising Inflation and Fuel Prices Are Increasing Political Pressure on PML-N

ISLAMABAD: Anchorperson and political analyst Muneeb Farooq has said that recent monsoon rains, rising inflation, and repeated increases in petroleum prices have added to the political challenges facing the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In his analysis, Farooq noted that videos showing rainwater accumulation in different parts of Lahore have been widely shared on social media following the recent monsoon spell. He said the Punjab government has defended its performance by maintaining that water was drained from most affected areas within two to three hours and the situation was brought under control quickly.

Farooq observed that while the government may highlight development projects and administrative achievements, the political gains from such efforts are often overshadowed by rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of essential commodities. According to him, the public directly feels the impact of inflation, and the federal government bears the brunt of the criticism.

The analyst said the ruling PML-N is currently facing the challenge of preserving its political support. He remarked that the party’s leaders are dealing with continued opposition criticism over the “Form 47” election allegations while also facing public dissatisfaction over inflation and higher petroleum prices.

Commenting on the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Farooq said the party currently appears to be in a comparatively stronger political position. He cited its recent political success in Gilgit-Baltistan and its long-standing government in Sindh since 2008 as factors contributing to its stability.

He added that governments in power may not always fully appreciate the intensity of public frustration, but rising inflation has created widespread discontent at the grassroots level. In his view, if general elections were held under the current economic conditions, the PML-N could face significant political challenges.
