Grapes and Berries May Help Improve Joint Health, Study Suggests

ISLAMABAD: Regular consumption of grapes and berries may help support joint health, according to a review of scientific studies conducted by Chinese researchers.

Joint pain affects millions of people worldwide, particularly older adults, and researchers say a naturally occurring plant compound found in these fruits may play a protective role against joint-related disorders.

The study focused on resveratrol, a polyphenol compound found in grapes and various berries. Researchers reviewed previous scientific evidence to examine its potential benefits for joint health.

According to the findings, resveratrol possesses powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is considered one of the leading causes of joint diseases, and the compound appears to help reduce inflammation through multiple biological pathways.

Scientists noted that resveratrol has also been widely studied over the past few decades for its potential to slow cellular aging and protect cells from damage.

However, the researchers pointed out that the compound is not easily absorbed by the body and is rapidly metabolized by the liver, which may limit its effectiveness.

Despite this limitation, the review found encouraging evidence that resveratrol may help protect joints from damage and reduce the risk of joint pain and injuries.

The researchers emphasized that further clinical studies are needed to confirm these findings and to support the development of medicines or supplements specifically designed to improve joint health.

In the meantime, experts suggest that including grapes and berries as part of a balanced diet may contribute to maintaining healthier joints.

The findings were published in the Journal of International Medical Research.
