Pakistan Repays Rs4.72 Trillion in Debt Ahead of Schedule for the First Time, Says Finance Adviser

Islamabad: Pakistan has repaid more than Rs4.722 trillion (approximately $17 billion) in debt ahead of schedule for the first time in the country’s history, marking a significant milestone in debt management, according to Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Shehzad.

Shehzad said that during the 2025–26 fiscal year, Pakistan has so far made early debt repayments worth Rs2.9 trillion, representing a 62% increase compared to the previous fiscal year.

According to the finance adviser, 51% of the early repayments were made to the State Bank of Pakistan, while the remaining 49% were paid to other financial institutions.

He added that Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio has declined from 75% to approximately 68.5%, reflecting improved fiscal management.

Shehzad said that stronger debt management and an effective financial strategy have boosted investor confidence and reinforced the country’s financial stability. He added that Pakistan is making steady progress toward a more sustainable and lower-cost financial system.
