Study Warns Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Face Increased Risk of Serious Lung Disease

Islamabad: A new medical study has found that thousands of people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be at risk of developing a serious lung condition that can lead to severe complications if left undiagnosed.

According to international media reports, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that primarily causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. However, new research indicates that the condition can also affect the lungs.

The study found that some RA patients develop Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease (RA-ILD), a condition that causes inflammation and scarring of lung tissue, making breathing increasingly difficult.

The findings, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, identify several key risk factors associated with the development of the disease.

Lead author Dr. Joshua Solomon, Director of the Interstitial Lung Disease Program at National Jewish Health, said rheumatoid arthritis is not limited to the joints and can significantly affect lung health, reducing patients’ overall quality of life.

According to the research, approximately one in six people with rheumatoid arthritis may develop some form of lung abnormality, while around one in ten may go on to develop RA-ILD.

Researchers said that early diagnosis is crucial, as timely treatment with medications that reduce inflammation, slow lung scarring, and help preserve breathing function can significantly improve patient outcomes.
