Balochistan Food Authority Destroys Vegetables Grown with Sewage Water in Health Safety Crackdown

QUETTA: The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) has intensified its crackdown on vegetables cultivated using untreated sewage water, destroying large quantities of crops grown on agricultural land along Spiny Road and the CPEC Road in Quetta.

According to the BFA, the destroyed crops included cabbage, coriander, mint, and other vegetables that had allegedly been irrigated with contaminated water from nearby sewage drains, posing serious health risks to consumers.

The Director General of the Balochistan Food Authority said that the cultivation of edible vegetables using toxic sewage water would not be tolerated under any circumstances, despite clear orders from the High Court and an existing government ban on the practice.

He warned that vegetables grown with contaminated sewage water could expose consumers to serious health hazards and various diseases, making strict enforcement of food safety regulations essential.

The BFA chief clarified that only non-edible crops are permitted to be cultivated using treated sewage water under existing regulations, while the cultivation of vegetables or any other food crops for human consumption with such water is strictly prohibited.

He added that the Balochistan Food Authority would continue its province-wide enforcement campaign against illegal farming practices. Crops grown in violation of food safety laws will be destroyed, and legal action will be taken against the responsible farmers and landowners to ensure the supply of safe and hygienic food to the public.
