More Than 76,000 People Died Alone at Home in Japan During 2025

TOKYO:More than **76,000 people** in Japan died alone in their homes during 2025, highlighting the country’s growing problem of social isolation, according to newly released government data.

Figures published by the National Police Agency (NPA) showed that **76,941 people** died alone at home across the country last year.

The agency said the figure accounts for nearly **one-third** of the **204,562 bodies** handled by police nationwide during 2025.

The latest statistics underscore Japan’s increasing challenge of social isolation, particularly among its aging population and people living alone. Authorities have been monitoring the trend as the country faces demographic changes, including a declining birth rate and a rapidly growing elderly population.

The data was released by the National Police Agency as part of its annual reporting on unattended deaths across Japan.
