Tomato Prices Surge to Rs300 Per Kilogram in Karachi Amid Seasonal Supply Shortage

KARACHI: Tomato prices have surged sharply in Karachi, with the retail price reaching Rs300 per kilogram due to a seasonal shortage in supply.

Former Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice President Younus Somro said tomato seedlings for the new crop have already been prepared in Sindh, and cultivation is expected to begin in July.

He explained that while monsoon rains typically damage around 10 to 20 percent of the crop, farmers have to take the risk to ensure continued production. According to Somro, tomato planting will continue until November, with harvesting extending through April. Prices generally remain stable during May and June.

Somro said the current price hike is a seasonal phenomenon that occurs during early July when market supplies decline before the arrival of the new crop. To bridge the supply gap, he said tomatoes imported from Iran are expected to enter the market.

He also highlighted the potential for year-round tomato production in Sindh through controlled-environment farming, saying such projects require significant investment. He noted that the Karachi Chamber of Commerce is in discussions with the Sindh government to promote this farming model.

Somro urged the government to create a favorable investment environment rather than relying solely on subsidized loans. He suggested that partnership-based financing and modern corporate farming structures could encourage local investment, allowing profits and losses to be shared among stakeholders.

Warning of future food security challenges, he stressed that increasing agricultural productivity through modern farming techniques is the most effective long-term solution.
