BISP Plagued by Massive Corruption, Punjab Data Inaccurate: Rana Sanaullah

Islamabad (Kudrat Daily) — Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Senator Rana Sanaullah, has alleged that the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is plagued by widespread corruption and claimed that its data, particularly in Punjab, is inaccurate.

Speaking on a private television program, Rana Sanaullah said that providing financial assistance of Rs13,000 to Rs17,000 every three months does little to improve the lives of poor families. He argued that such programs have failed to reduce poverty and, instead, poverty has increased over time.

He criticized the welfare initiative, saying it risks creating dependency rather than empowering people economically. According to him, the government should focus more on skill development and vocational training programs that enable individuals to earn sustainable livelihoods.

Commenting on the upcoming federal budget, Rana Sanaullah said that budget season often prompts lawmakers and coalition partners to raise concerns and demands related to their constituencies and districts. He expressed confidence that the government would address these concerns and manage the expectations of its allies and parliamentary members effectively before the budget is presented.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s growing circular debt and rising defense expenditures, stating that the country must maintain strong defense capabilities to uphold its position and dignity in the region.

Referring to the 18th Constitutional Amendment, Rana Sanaullah said that while it grants provinces greater authority, it also places significant responsibilities on them. He reiterated his concerns about BISP, maintaining that flaws in the program’s data and alleged corruption undermine its effectiveness in assisting the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
