Democratic Senator Cory Booker Challenges Rubio Over Iran Policy During Senate Hearing

WASHINGTON:Democratic Senator Cory Booker sharply criticized the Trump administration’s approach toward Iran during a Senate hearing, questioning why the United States appeared to be seeking a renewed agreement with Tehran.
Addressing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Booker asked why the U.S. was “begging” for a deal with Iran, arguing that Washington had previously abandoned a similar agreement. He also raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region and developments involving the Strait of Hormuz.
Responding to the criticism, Rubio rejected the suggestion that the United States was pleading for negotiations. He stated that the conflict involving Iran had ended and emphasized that discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program were highly technical and complex.
Rubio explained that nuclear negotiations cannot be resolved within a few days and may require extended discussions among technical experts. According to him, such meetings could continue for one, two, or even three months before a comprehensive agreement is reached.
The Secretary of State further said that Iran would need to commit to addressing the issue of its highly enriched uranium stockpiles as part of any future understanding.
Rubio also noted that Iran is now willing to discuss aspects of its nuclear program that it had previously refused to negotiate, describing this as a positive development in the diplomatic process.
The exchange highlighted continuing divisions in Washington over U.S. policy toward Iran and the future of negotiations concerning Tehran’s nuclear activities.
