Action decided against officials over delays and poor performance in net metering process

Islamabad (Khabrain Report) Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has taken strict notice of continuous delays in net metering connections and directed all power distribution companies (DISCOs) across the country to clear all pending applications by June 1.

According to sources, the minister warned that strict action will be taken against DISCOs deliberately causing delays, while bonuses of underperforming officers may also be suspended.

During a briefing, it was revealed that 1,355 net metering applications are currently pending with various DISCOs. Officials said that in several areas, applications were also rejected due to improper tagging of transformers with net metering consumers.

Expressing strong anger over the situation, the energy minister stated that unnecessary delays in approving applications despite NEPRA’s defined timelines are unacceptable. He instructed all DISCOs to ensure completion of all remaining net metering connections before June 1.

Sources further said that the minister has also hinted at administrative action against Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, and Sub-Divisional Officers over poor performance.

Meanwhile, NEPRA has already amended the Solar Regulations 2026. According to the new notification, contracts of already registered solar consumers will remain intact; however, any user who changes their solar capacity will not be eligible for previous tariff rates.

It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also taken notice of the new solar rules and directed the Power Division to formulate a comprehensive strategy to protect the rights of existing solar consumers.
