Experts Say Lemon Juice on an Empty Stomach Has Limited Benefits, May Affect Teeth and Digestion

Islamabad: Health experts have cautioned that drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach, a popular wellness trend often associated with detoxification and weight loss, offers only limited health benefits and may negatively affect dental and digestive health if consumed excessively.

Lemons contain vitamin C and antioxidants that help support metabolism and protect cells from oxidative stress. According to the U.S. FoodData Central database, 100 grams of lemon provides around 53 milligrams of vitamin C.

Despite widespread claims that lemon water can cleanse the body of toxins, promote weight loss, and improve skin health, experts say scientific evidence supporting these benefits remains weak.

Dr. Bui Thi Duyen, Deputy Head of Nutrition at Vietnam’s Military Hospital 175, said there is currently no scientific proof that lemon water directly burns calories or causes weight loss. She explained that the main benefit of drinking lemon water in the morning is rehydrating the body after sleep and providing a small amount of vitamin C.

She added that any weight-related benefit may simply come from replacing sugary beverages, such as soft drinks or bubble tea, with lemon water.

Experts also warned that acidic drinks like lemon juice can damage tooth enamel if consumed frequently without enough water or proper oral hygiene. The American Dental Association notes that repeated exposure to acidic beverages may weaken the protective outer layer of teeth.

In addition, people suffering from gastritis, acidity, or acid reflux may experience stomach irritation and discomfort after drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach.

Doctors recommend diluting half a lemon in 200 to 300 milliliters of water with little or no sugar. Using a straw and rinsing the mouth afterward may help protect tooth enamel.

Health specialists emphasized that no single food or drink can determine overall health, stressing the importance of a balanced diet, regular eating habits, and a healthy lifestyle.
