Famous YouTuber “Johnny Somali” Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail in South Korea

Seoul: A court in Seoul has sentenced controversial American YouTuber Ramsey Khalid Ismael, widely known as “Johnny Somali,” to six months in prison over provocative and offensive online content.

According to international media reports, the 25-year-old YouTuber was convicted after livestreaming and posting several videos during his stay in South Korea that sparked widespread public outrage.

One of the most controversial incidents involved him dancing and making obscene gestures at a memorial dedicated to women who were forced into sexual slavery during World War II, an act that deeply offended the public. Although he later issued an apology, it was not accepted by authorities or many citizens.

The court ruled that he intentionally insulted public sentiment and violated social norms in South Korea for the sake of gaining views and online monetization. It also cited additional disruptive behavior, including causing disturbances in public places, spreading food in inappropriate settings, harassing passengers in public transport, and posting misleading or obscene content.

Prosecutors had sought a three-year prison sentence; however, the court handed down a six-month sentence and ordered immediate detention, citing risk of flight. He was taken into custody directly from the courtroom and transferred to prison.

During the hearing, the YouTuber expressed remorse and apologized to the people of South Korea.

The case has been widely discussed online as an example of irresponsible behavior driven by the pursuit of social media fame.
