U.S. and Iran Hold High-Stakes Talks in Islamabad Amid Fragile Ceasefire Efforts

Islamabad: Delegations from the United States and Iran have met in Islamabad for critical negotiations aimed at stabilizing a fragile ceasefire and exploring the possibility of a broader long-term agreement, according to diplomatic sources.

The talks, hosted in Pakistan, are expected to focus on a wide range of complex and sensitive issues, with Iran’s nuclear program at the center of discussions. Washington is seeking firm guarantees that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons and is calling for strict limits on uranium enrichment under enhanced monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran, meanwhile, insists on its right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program, including uranium enrichment, describing it as a matter of national sovereignty.

Sanctions relief remains another major point of contention. Tehran is demanding the immediate lifting of all U.S. and international sanctions as well as the return of frozen overseas assets. The United States has proposed a phased easing of sanctions tied to verifiable Iranian compliance with nuclear and security commitments.

Regional security issues are also high on the agenda. Washington is pressing for an end to Iran’s support for allied armed groups across the Middle East, while Iran is calling for a reduction in U.S. military presence in the region and guarantees of non-aggression.

Strategic control and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is another sensitive issue. Iran seeks formal recognition of its regulatory role over the vital waterway, while the U.S. insists on ensuring uninterrupted and secure international shipping through the global energy chokepoint.

Iran’s ballistic missile program is also expected to feature in the talks, with the United States pushing for restrictions, while Tehran maintains that its missile development is purely defensive.

Both sides have acknowledged deep differences, but officials suggest that the negotiations may continue beyond the current round, potentially extending the ceasefire period while confidence-building measures are explored.

Despite limited expectations for a breakthrough, diplomats say the talks represent a rare opportunity to maintain dialogue and prevent further escalation.
