Controversy Forces Removal of U.S. Army Chief General Randy George

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – General Randy George has reportedly been removed from his position as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army following a major dispute with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over senior military promotions and authority in personnel decisions.

According to media reports, General George refused to block or remove certain senior officers from promotion lists, leading to escalating tensions between him and the defense leadership. The disagreement ultimately resulted in him being asked to take early retirement.

Leadership Change Amid Ongoing Conflict
The development comes at a critical time as the United States remains engaged in a conflict with Iran. President Donald Trump recently claimed that U.S. forces are close to achieving key military objectives and have made significant gains.

The move is being seen as part of broader changes in the Pentagon’s top leadership during Trump’s second term.

Dispute Over Authority, Not Strategy
International media reports suggest the conflict was not about military strategy but rather disagreements over staffing decisions and authority. General George’s close working relationship with Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll is also said to have contributed to the tensions.

Reports indicate that the defense secretary had blocked the promotion of four officers to one-star general rank, while General George and Driscoll opposed the decision, citing the officers’ strong service records.

Refusal to Meet Escalated Crisis
According to The New York Times, General George had requested a meeting with the defense secretary about two weeks earlier to resolve the issue, but the request was reportedly denied, further intensifying the dispute.

Track Record as Army Chief
General George was nominated in 2023 by former President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate, with his term originally set to run until 2027. During his tenure, he helped address the Army’s 2024 recruitment crisis and promoted the use of low-cost drones and advanced weapons systems, lessons drawn from the Ukraine war.

He also launched the “Transformation in Contact” program, allowing brigades of around 3,000 soldiers to test new technologies, including artificial intelligence-based systems.

Other Senior Officers Also Removed
Reports further claim that General David Hodne and Major General William Green Jr. have also been removed from their positions. Earlier in 2025, several senior officials, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown, were also dismissed.

Sources add that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered a reduction of at least 20% in the number of four-star generals and admirals in the U.S. military.
