Tensions Flare Between Ali Muhammad Khan and Azam Nazeer Tarar During Parliamentary Committee Meeting on Election Act Amendments
Islamabad: Tensions erupted between PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Nazeer Tarar during a parliamentary committee meeting on proposed amendments to the Election Act 2017.
The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Rana Eradat Sharif, convened to discuss the bill proposing changes to the Election Act. During the meeting, committee member Bilal Azhar Kiyani provided a briefing on the bill. This led to a heated exchange between opposition member Ali Muhammad Khan and Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
The conflict began when Azam Nazeer Tarar’s remarks were challenged by Ali Muhammad Khan, who pointed out that the bill in question was a private member’s bill, not a government bill. Tarar responded, stating that he had the right to advocate for it if he was convinced, and that Khan should not dictate his role. Khan retorted, asserting that Tarar had no right to bulldoze the process.
Later, Tarar commented on the judicial role in interpreting laws and criticized Khan’s party for not seeking redress from the Supreme Court but instead aligning with the Sunni Ittehad Council. He emphasized that political party affiliations should be irrevocable and cautioned against conflating parliamentary and judicial issues, highlighting the backlog of 60,000 cases due to the courts’ heavy workload.
Ultimately, the Minister for Law expressed support for the proposed amendments, affirming that they align with constitutional and legal standards.
