Parliament, Not Supreme Court, Has the Right to Write the Constitution: Punjab Assembly Speaker

Lahore: Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmed Khan has asserted that the authority to write the Constitution rests solely with Parliament, not the Supreme Court. Speaking to the media outside the Judicial Complex in Lahore, he expressed frustration over his appearance in a long-pending defamation case.
Malik Ahmed Khan said he experienced “mental distress” due to attending proceedings in the defamation suit, which has been under trial for seven to eight years. He emphasized that the justice system should have resolved the matter much earlier, especially since he was appearing as a witness.
He stated that lawyers and all stakeholders must sit together to improve the judicial system, ensuring timely justice for the public. “These reforms have only been introduced now, but I have been raising my voice for the last 15 years,” he added.
The Speaker further said that he always allots more time to the opposition in the Assembly, and reiterated that “only Parliament has the right to write the Constitution; the Supreme Court does not have this authority.”
Earlier, the Lahore Sessions Court heard former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s defamation lawsuit against the founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The court summoned additional witnesses from Shehbaz Sharif and adjourned the hearing until December 13. Additional Sessions Judge Yalmaz Ghani presided over the proceedings.
Shehbaz Sharif has filed a Rs. 10 billion defamation suit against the PTI founder.
