No Proposal Under Consideration for 28th Constitutional Amendment, Top Officials Clarify

ISLAMABAD — Despite recent remarks by some ministers, senior government officials have confirmed that no proposal for a 28th Constitutional Amendment is currently under consideration.
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry firmly rejected the impression that the government is working on any such amendment package. Speaking to the media, he stated — on his own behalf and on behalf of Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar — that “no 28th amendment is being considered.”
A key official at the Prime Minister’s Office also confirmed that no new constitutional amendment is under review at the PM House. “There is no such proposal under consideration,” sources said.
Dr. Tariq explained that no meeting had been held on the subject and described the ongoing discussion as “media-driven.” He added that some proposals excluded from the 27th Amendment package due to lack of consensus could possibly be revisited in the future — but emphasized that no process related to the 28th Amendment is underway at present.
He reiterated, “There is currently no consideration of a 28th Constitutional Amendment,” adding that he reconfirmed this with the law minister. According to him, anyone inquiring about the amendment is being given the same response.
Speculation had intensified after some ministers mentioned the 28th Amendment. Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah recently stated that the government would “soon introduce the 28th Constitutional Amendment,” reportedly suggesting that it may pertain to local governments, the National Finance Commission (NFC), and health-related matters — pending consensus.
Similarly, media reports claimed that Minister of State for Law Barrister Adeel Malik also referenced the amendment, though he has remained unreachable in recent days despite multiple attempts to contact him.
