Trump Threatens Major Tariff Hike on India Within 24 Hours

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to India, threatening a significant increase in tariffs within the next 24 hours if trade concerns are not addressed. In an exclusive interview with CNBC, Trump stated that while a 25% tariff has already been imposed on Indian goods, further substantial hikes are imminent.
The proposed tariff escalation is expected to impact key Indian export sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto parts. Experts believe this move is part of a broader political pressure strategy aimed at discouraging India from continuing oil purchases from Russia.
During the interview, Trump also warned that the cost of imported medicines in the U.S. could rise by 150% to 250% within a year, pointing to the vulnerabilities in the current trade dynamics.
Observers note that Trump’s approach may be tied to India’s growing role in BRICS and its continued energy ties with Moscow. Just a day earlier, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize India for buying oil from Russia and allegedly reselling it to other countries at a profit, indirectly supporting Russia during the Ukraine conflict.
The situation is being closely watched by global markets, investors, and trade communities in both countries, as any tariff hike could escalate trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi. Despite the mounting pressure, India has reiterated its commitment to making sovereign decisions based on its national interests.
