Relief for Karachi: Electricity Prices May Drop by Rs. 4.69 Per Unit

Islamabad: In a welcome development for residents of Karachi, electricity prices may be reduced by Rs. 4.69 per unit, pending approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which is scheduled to hold a hearing on June 19.
The proposed reduction was submitted by K-Electric under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. If approved, consumers across the city could collectively benefit from a relief of Rs. 7.17 billion, a much-needed respite amid rising inflation and already high power tariffs.
Earlier, on June 5, NEPRA had approved a Rs. 2.99 per unit decrease in K-Electric’s rates for March’s fuel adjustment, which will be reflected in the June electricity bills.
Meanwhile, Karachi continues to face severe and unannounced load-shedding, sparking public outrage and pushing even elected representatives to protest. The combination of intense summer heat and persistent electricity shortages has worsened the situation for citizens.
Speaking to the media, K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi acknowledged the burden of high electricity prices, attributing the core issue to government policies rather than the utility itself.
