NEPRA Reduces Electric Vehicle Charging Tariff to Encourage Adoption

Islamabad:In a significant move to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce dependency on imported fuel, the **National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA)** has announced a major reduction in the basic tariff for electric vehicle charging stations.
Effective immediately, the basic tariff for EV charging stations has been reduced to **Rs. 23.57 per unit**, marking a **21.98 rupee per unit** decrease from the previous rate of **Rs. 45.55 per unit**.
Additionally, the previously imposed **Rs. 24.44 per unit limited profit margin** on charging stations has been eliminated, allowing for market-based determination of profits, as per the federal government’s request. NEPRA stated that this adjustment was made to support the government’s broader initiative to encourage the use of electric vehicles and promote environmentally friendly alternatives.
The decision comes after a formal request from the federal government to NEPRA to reduce the tariffs, aimed at making electric vehicle charging more affordable for consumers.
In a related development, **Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar**, informed the Senate today that the government is actively working to protect the environment and reduce reliance on imported fuel by encouraging the use of electric vehicles. He also highlighted that **30 electric buses** have been imported from China and deployed at the **Jinnah Convention Center** in Islamabad, where state-of-the-art charging facilities have been set up.
Minister Tarar also revealed that, in the coming two and a half years, the government plans to set up **NADRA centers** in every **Union Council** across the country to provide greater convenience to the public.
This tariff reduction is expected to make electric vehicle charging more accessible and affordable, potentially boosting the adoption of EVs in Pakistan.
