Nigerian Groom Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Throwing Money at Wedding Celebration

In an attempt to make his wedding ceremony unforgettable, a groom in Nigeria found himself facing serious legal consequences for his joyous expression. Abdullah Musa Husaini, the groom, was sentenced to six months in prison after throwing 100,000 Nigerian Naira into the air during a traditional dance at his wedding. While his actions were meant to celebrate his happiness, they were viewed as an offense under Nigerian law.

### **Celebration Turns to Crime**

The incident took place in Kano, Nigeria, in December, when Abdullah, during his wedding festivities, showered the crowd with money. However, this celebratory gesture was deemed as an act of “currency abuse” by the authorities. The police promptly filed charges for the “illegal use of money,” and Abdullah admitted his crime in court.

Following his confession, the Kano High Court sentenced him to six months in prison. The court’s decision was based on the provisions of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which, under the Central Bank Act of 2007, criminalizes such acts. According to the law, throwing money, dancing on it, or stepping on it is considered disrespect to the national currency and is punishable by either a fine or imprisonment — or both.

### **Public Reaction and Criticism**

This legal decision has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their discontent over the apparent imbalance in the application of justice. One user commented, “The looters of the national treasury are given a free pass, but those celebrating at their wedding are thrown into jail! Is this what justice looks like?”

### **A Growing Trend of Legal Action**

Interestingly, this isn’t the first case of its kind in Nigeria. Earlier, both an actress and a transgender individual were sentenced to six months in prison for similar offenses of “abusing currency” during celebrations. In a country where the tradition of throwing money during joyous occasions has long been part of celebrations, it is now increasingly coming under the scrutiny of the law.

As a result, the people of Nigeria are now being reminded that even in moments of happiness, caution is needed to avoid violating laws that protect the integrity of the nation’s currency. The debate surrounding the law has also opened broader discussions about fairness and the broader issues of justice in the country.
