“A Girl Came Through the Crowd to Get an Autograph; It Is an Eyewitness Account, I Am Not Lying”: Maryam Nawaz

ATTOCK (Daily Qudrat): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said that when I went to Mandi Bahauddin, I met a 21-year-old girl whose both hands were covered in blood. I affectionately asked her how blood got on her hands. She told me, “I came through the crowd to get an autograph from you.” This is an eyewitness account; I am not lying.

Addressing an event in Attock, she said that opponents thought that now the people would ask me tough questions over the office of Chief Minister, but the people’s love proved all their calculations wrong. Previously, the tradition was that ordinary people and workers were pushed off the stage and made to fall, but I consider staying among the people, listening to their sorrows and pains, and direct contact with them to be the basic axis of my politics.

The Punjab Chief Minister said that one should never be frightened by difficulties in life nor lose courage. To reach a great destination, one has to cross a river of fire, and one also has to endure the hardships of long imprisonment and jails. Therefore, a person should never be disheartened. The peace of heart that comes from serving the people with sincere intentions cannot be found in anything else in the world.

She further said that Attock’s local bazaar has been rebuilt and decorated on modern lines with such beauty that it has now left Lahore’s famous Liberty Market behind. To uproot the long-standing problems of Attock city, which sinks in water after rain, work is continuing rapidly day and night on mega projects underway at a cost of billions of rupees. If anyone can prove that I or any of my close ones have committed even one rupee of corruption, I will answer before Allah and the people of this country.

Maryam Nawaz, expressing severe anger over Federal Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain’s statements regarding corruption in Punjab, said that if Chaudhry Salik has any evidence of corruption against the Punjab government or her, he should bring it before the people, otherwise she will drag him to court. As a federal minister, he should avoid levelling airy allegations without any documentary evidence. If the current provincial government and system are so corrupt in his eyes, then under what moral justification is he sitting on the chair of a federal ministry?

Regarding Chaudhry Salik’s praise of former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, her position was that the person says the best government was Pervaiz Elahi’s, but the reality is that when I went to Gujrat during the rain, so much water had accumulated on the roads and in the neighbourhoods that even my own car sank in the water. I will not come under anyone’s blackmailing or pressure on the issue of corruption; all appointments across the province are being ensured purely on merit, because every person appointed on recommendation sinks the boat of the country and the poor people.
