No Roads Closed in Islamabad, Containers Placed to Protect Citizens, Says Information Ministry

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has rejected Al Jazeera’s reporting on alleged road closures in Islamabad, describing it as misleading, one-sided and an attempt to create a negative impression of the situation in the federal capital.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the ministry said that no roads had been closed in Islamabad. It clarified that temporary containers had been placed at certain sensitive locations in accordance with Islamabad High Court directives to ensure the protection of citizens’ lives and property.

According to the ministry, the precautionary measures were taken in view of previous incidents of violent protests, disruptive activities and the fragile law and order situation. Their primary objective, it said, was to maintain peace and security in the federal capital and safeguard ordinary citizens.

The ministry maintained that ensuring public safety was a constitutional and legal responsibility of the state and that the measures had been adopted in the context of court orders.

The statement further alleged that the foreign broadcaster had portrayed the security arrangements merely as road closures while disregarding the facts on the ground.

It said all major roads remained fully open to traffic and described Al Jazeera’s reporting as one-sided and an attempt to create a negative perception of the situation.

The ministry added that what it termed baseless propaganda could not change the facts.
