Govt Weighs Governor’s Rule or Emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering various constitutional options, including the imposition of Governor’s Rule or emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amid ongoing political and security tensions in the province.
According to reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level consultative meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, where the political and law-and-order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was reviewed.
The meeting discussed constitutional options available to the federal government, including measures under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi briefed participants on the prevailing security situation, while the government also reviewed the PTI’s announcement of a long march towards Islamabad on October 4 and developments involving the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.
According to sources, legal opinions were sought regarding possible constitutional measures. The federal government is also expected to consult President Asif Ali Zardari before deciding on further steps concerning the province.

The meeting reportedly also discussed the federal government’s concerns regarding the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and coordination between the provincial and federal authorities.
The possibility of Governor’s Rule has been publicly discussed by federal officials in recent days. KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has also said that the Constitution provides for Governor’s Rule under extraordinary circumstances if the law-and-order situation deteriorates significantly.
The federal government has yet to announce a final decision on whether any emergency measure or Governor’s Rule will be imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
