Good News for Protected Consumers Using 200 Units of Electricity

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) — Good news has emerged from the government for protected consumers using 200 units of electricity, under which using more than 200 units of electricity will no longer result in the loss of the protected category. According to a private TV report, sources in the Ministry of Energy say that a proposal to provide relief to non-protected domestic electricity consumers is under consideration. The Power Division has decided to review the protected formula, under which it is proposed to charge additional rates from this month for using more than 200 units of electricity, whereas previously a protected consumer had to make additional payments for 6 months upon using more than 200 units of electricity.

That is, if a protected consumer used more than 200 units of electricity even once, their protected category would be terminated.

As a result, the protected consumer would be included in the non-protected category for the next 6 months despite using fewer units. But now this will not happen; instead, only the additional units will be charged, and the consumer’s protected category will remain intact. It has been reported that the federal Ministry of Energy has begun work on a proposal to change the existing formula for protected consumers in order to reduce the additional financial burden of electricity on non-protected domestic consumers. After final approval of the proposal, a change in the existing procedure for protected consumers is likely.
