Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods Amid Trade Dispute

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods following the imposition of higher tariffs by the Trump administration.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said tariffs on American steel, electronics and other products would take effect from September 8.

Carney said every dollar would be accounted for in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses. He added that Canada was effectively in a “state of war” with the United States over the trade dispute.

The announcement came after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa failed, prompting US President Donald Trump to impose a 50 percent tariff on Canadian imports from today.

The US tariffs are expected to affect Canadian exports to the United States worth around $20 billion, putting further pressure on trade relations between the two neighboring countries.
