Imran Khan Is in Good Health, Political Standards Have Been Dragged Into the Gutter, Says Khawaja Asif
ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that PTI founder Imran Khan is in good health, while criticizing the opposition for what he described as lowering the standards of politics.
Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, Khawaja Asif said Imran Khan’s sister had met him and could confirm his health condition. He said the problem with Imran Khan’s eye had gradually improved, while he had a minor blood pressure issue for which medication was being provided.
Khawaja Asif said turning Imran Khan’s health into a political issue amounted to politicizing the matter. He said he could state on oath that Imran Khan had no serious health problem and was in good health.
He added that all details regarding Imran Khan’s medical condition would eventually become public and that both the government and opposition would be able to see the doctors’ report.
The defence minister recalled that when he was in jail, Imran Khan had been advised to undergo hernia surgery. He claimed that Imran Khan had asked for a video to verify whether the surgery was actually being performed, adding that the video was still in his possession.
Khawaja Asif also referred to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s health issues, saying that despite undergoing two surgeries two months earlier, discussions about his platelet count continued. He alleged that Imran Khan and his supporters had previously mocked Nawaz Sharif’s health condition.
He said the opposition had also made jokes about health issues during rallies in the United States, arguing that they had failed to recognize the seriousness of genuine illness.
Khawaja Asif said the entire PML-N leadership had faced imprisonment in the past, but they had never threatened the government or Parliament over the detention of Maryam Nawaz, Nawaz Sharif or other leaders.
“You were in power before. What did you do then?” he asked, adding that such attitudes could not resolve political problems.
He urged the opposition not to put Parliament at stake and said that, if permitted, he could play videos concerning Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kulsoom Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz.
The defence minister said political leaders should show some tolerance when faced with such situations.
“You have dragged the standards of politics into the gutter,” Khawaja Asif said, adding that he was sitting down because the opposition leader had asked him to do so.
