Countrywide Wheel-Jam Strike to Be Held After 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal, Says Hafiz Naeemur Rehman
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced that a countrywide wheel-jam strike will be held after 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal as part of the party’s campaign for public rights.
Addressing participants of a sit-in, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticized the ruling elite, alleging that influential groups were getting their taxes and loans waived while ordinary citizens were struggling with electricity bills that had become higher than their monthly salaries.
He said trillions of rupees were being collected from the public in taxes under various pretexts, while the ruling elite continued to enjoy different privileges and facilities.
The JI chief said the campaign was no longer limited to party workers and that ordinary citizens had also joined the struggle.
Announcing the next phase of the protest movement, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said a wheel-jam strike would be observed across the country after 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal. He said that following large sit-ins and strikes, the party would now move towards Islamabad.
He vowed that Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its struggle until the rights of the people were secured.
Jamaat-e-Islami has been staging a sit-in outside the Punjab Chief Minister’s House in Lahore for the past four days against the petroleum levy, with Hafiz Naeemur Rehman personally leading the protest.
JI workers are also holding sit-ins outside governors’ houses in other provinces as part of the ongoing campaign.
