Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz, Demands US Fulfill Agreement

TEHRAN:Iran has presented a set of demands to the United States for reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, according to a CNN report.

The demands were reportedly conveyed by Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

According to the report, Iran has also demanded that the United States fully implement all terms of the so-called “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” whose validity has now expired.

Under the memorandum, the United States and Iran had agreed to halt military operations on various fronts, while Iran committed not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons and to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

In return, the United States had agreed to end its naval blockade of Iran, lift economic sanctions, assist in Iran’s reconstruction and restore frozen Iranian funds.

Iran maintains that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be considered separately from the implementation of these commitments.

The development comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the strategic waterway remaining at the center of efforts to restore maritime traffic and ease disruptions to global energy supplies.
