Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Colombia, 20 Reported Dead

BOGOTA: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale jolted Colombia, with strong tremors felt in the capital Bogota and several other areas of the country.

According to foreign news agencies, the US Geological Survey and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.4.

The epicentre was reported at a depth of approximately 115 kilometres. Strong tremors were also felt in neighbouring Peru, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.

Residents in Bogota confirmed feeling intense shaking, prompting many people to flee buildings and gather in open areas in fear.

According to reports, several buildings collapsed in parts of Colombia following the earthquake. At least 20 people were initially confirmed dead, while several others were injured.

Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage, and further casualties or losses may be reported as rescue and assessment operations continue.
