National Party Rejects Further Division of Federating Units in the Name of New Provinces

QUETTA: The National Party has rejected the idea of further dividing Pakistan’s federating units under the proposal of creating new provinces, saying the country’s existing provinces represent historical, cultural, geographical, and national identities rather than merely administrative boundaries.

In a statement issued in response to the ongoing debate on the creation of new provinces, the party’s central spokesperson said that many regions had previously been separated from their original national units due to colonial policies and what the party described as artificial administrative divisions. Therefore, any further division of existing federating units is unacceptable.

The spokesperson said the National Party does not support the creation of new provinces if it results in the fragmentation of the country’s established national entities.

According to the statement, Pakistan’s real challenges are not related to creating new provinces but to ensuring the implementation of the Constitution, the supremacy of Parliament, respect for the identity and autonomy of the country’s nationalities, equitable distribution of resources, freedom of expression, an independent and impartial judiciary and Election Commission, and the establishment of empowered local governments.

The party maintained that addressing these constitutional and institutional issues would promote democratic stability, public welfare, and sustainable national development.

The spokesperson further said Pakistan’s political system is based on democratic and parliamentary principles, and that implementing the Constitution in its true spirit would help strengthen political stability, national harmony, and long-term development.

The statement concluded that the National Party opposes any initiative that could undermine the historical identity, constitutional status, or national character of Pakistan’s federating units, emphasizing that a strong federation depends on respecting the rights, identity, and autonomy of its constituent units.
