Maulana Tariq Jamil Warns Excessive Fast Food Consumption May Affect Mood and Family Life

Islamabad: Renowned Pakistani religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil has said that excessive consumption of fast food and processed foods may negatively affect people’s mood, increase anger, and contribute to family conflicts.
Speaking during a recent podcast, Maulana Tariq Jamil discussed lifestyle, nutrition, and health-related issues. Responding to a question about the growing trend of women cooking less at home, he described the shift as an “unnatural trend” that could have consequences for both public health and society.
He recalled a visit to the United States in 1998, where, according to him, a doctor showed statistics indicating that nearly $1 trillion had been spent on antidepressant medications in a single year in North America. He suggested that the figure would likely be even higher today.
Maulana Tariq Jamil said that artificial and processed foods can influence human behavior. According to him, excessive fast food consumption may lead to mood swings, increased anger, and reduced tolerance, which can negatively affect relationships between spouses and contribute to domestic disputes.
He also urged people to adopt healthier eating habits, recommending traditional homemade meals, avoiding junk food, and reducing the use of cooking oils. He encouraged the use of desi ghee, saying it remains available in many households and can be part of a traditional diet.
The religious scholar further cautioned that if home cooking disappears, it could contribute to a rise in health problems. He also described bakery products and commercially produced bread as unhealthy foods that may be harmful to health.
