Daily Multivitamins May Improve Heart Health in Older Adults, New Study Suggests

Islamabad: A new medical study has found that taking a daily multivitamin may help improve the overall health of older adults, particularly by supporting heart and blood vessel health.

Researchers noted that as people age, natural declines in physical and cognitive functions increase the risk of various health conditions. To examine whether multivitamins could help, scientists at Augusta University in the United States analyzed data from more than 16,000 adults aged 60 and above.

At the start of the study, none of the participants had major cardiovascular disease. They were divided into four groups: one received a daily multivitamin supplement, another was given cocoa extract, a third received both supplements, and the fourth was given a placebo.

The three-year study monitored participants’ daily activities, physical health, and cardiovascular function.

According to the findings, participants who took daily multivitamins showed better overall heart health and a lower risk of certain serious health conditions compared with those who did not. Researchers also found that multivitamins may help maintain the health of the carotid artery, the major blood vessel that carries blood to the brain through the neck.

The researchers said multivitamins can help address minor deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, potentially improving cellular function and contributing to healthier blood vessels.

However, the scientists emphasized that further research is needed to better understand the long-term effects of multivitamins and the biological mechanisms behind the observed benefits.

Health experts also advised that individuals should consult a healthcare professional before starting any dietary supplement, as nutritional needs and medical conditions vary from person to person.
