Commander National Strategic Command: A Key Position in Pakistan’s Strategic Defence Framework

Islamabad: Significant changes were introduced to Pakistan’s military chain of command through the 27th Constitutional Amendment last year, including the creation of the post of Commander National Strategic Command.

The position was established to assume the role of nuclear manager, a responsibility that was previously held by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). The earlier arrangement came to an end on November 27, 2025, paving the way for the newly created office.

The post of Commander National Strategic Command is regarded as one of the country’s most important strategic appointments due to its significance in matters relating to Pakistan’s strategic capabilities and national defence policy.

Under the constitutional amendment, the appointment, reappointment, and extension of tenure of the Commander National Strategic Command are made on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

The office of Chief of Defence Forces is also a newly established position created under the 27th Constitutional Amendment as part of efforts to introduce a unified command structure for Pakistan’s armed forces. Following the adoption of the amendment, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who had been serving as Chief of Army Staff, was appointed as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces.

The Pakistan Army Act further stipulates that the appointment, reappointment, or extension of the tenure of the Commander National Strategic Command, as well as the exercise of powers by the appointing authority in this regard, shall not be challenged before any court on any grounds.

The establishment of the post underscores its strategic importance in Pakistan’s national security architecture and reflects the country’s evolving defence command structure.
